David rushed toward the bottom of the staircase.
The stroller lay on its side.
His wife, Rachel, was crying hysterically.
“She pushed it!” Rachel screamed, pointing at the babysitter. “I saw her!”
But Mia, the babysitter, was sitting on the floor several feet away, holding the baby safely against her chest.
“I didn’t push anything,” Mia whispered. “I grabbed Lily before the stroller fell.”
David’s anger exploded.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Dad!”
His thirteen-year-old son, Ethan, came running down the hallway with his tablet.
“Don’t call the police yet.”
Rachel immediately turned toward him.
“Ethan, stay out of this.”
But Ethan opened the home security app.
“The hallway camera recorded everything.”
David pressed play.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Mia placed baby Lily in the stroller and walked into the nursery to get a bottle.
Then someone appeared.
David leaned closer.
It wasn’t Rachel.
It was Rachel’s younger sister, Amanda.
She had been staying with them for nearly a month.
Amanda walked toward the stroller and looked around.
Then she crouched down.
David’s expression changed.
She released the brake.
Seconds later, the stroller began rolling toward the stairs.
Mia ran from the nursery, caught Lily and pulled her out just before the empty stroller crashed down the steps.
David stared at the screen.
“Amanda did this?”
But Ethan shook his head.
“Keep watching.”
The footage continued.
Rachel entered the hallway moments later.
She looked down the stairs.
Then at Mia.
Then Amanda stepped from behind a doorway.
Rachel walked directly toward her sister.
The camera had no audio, but Ethan had found another recording.
“The doorbell camera picked up their voices through the open front door.”
He turned up the volume.
Amanda’s voice came first.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.”
Then Rachel answered.
“It doesn’t matter. We blame Mia.”
David slowly turned toward his wife.
Rachel’s face went completely white.
“You knew?”
“David, please…”
“Why would you do this?”
Nobody answered.
Then Mia spoke.
“Because I found something.”
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small flash drive.
“Three days ago, I was using the family computer to print Lily’s doctor appointment. A folder opened automatically.”
Inside were scanned documents bearing David’s signature.
Except David had never signed them.
There were loan applications.
Property-transfer documents.
And paperwork connected to a company he had never heard of.
David looked at Rachel.
“What is this?”
Amanda suddenly headed toward the door.
Ethan stepped in front of it.
“You should probably see one more video, Dad.”
Two nights earlier, Ethan’s security camera had recorded Amanda entering David’s office after midnight.
Rachel followed seconds later.
They spent nearly forty minutes inside.
David immediately opened his office safe.
A folder containing several original documents was gone.
Now he understood.
Mia had accidentally discovered the forged paperwork.
Rachel and Amanda needed her out of the house before she could tell him.
The stroller incident was supposed to make Mia look irresponsible.
But something had gone dangerously wrong.
“You risked Lily just to frame her?” David asked.
Rachel began sobbing.
“I never thought the stroller would actually reach the stairs.”
David stared at her in disbelief.
“That doesn’t make it better.”
He called the authorities and handed over the recordings and documents.
Then he walked over to Mia.
She was still holding Lily.
His daughter was completely unharmed.
“You saved her,” David said quietly.
Mia nodded.
“I would never let anything happen to her.”
David looked toward Ethan.
If his son hadn’t checked the cameras, Mia might have been blamed for something she had actually prevented.
But Ethan wasn’t smiling.
Instead, he stared at the final frame of the security footage.
“Dad…”
“What?”
Ethan enlarged the image.
At the far end of the hallway stood another person.
Someone who had watched Amanda release the stroller brake…
and done absolutely nothing to stop her.
David recognized him immediately.
And suddenly, the forged documents were no longer the biggest secret inside his house.
